Overview
The Department of Chemistry came into existence from the inception of the college in 1968 and has the history of 50 years so far. Rev. Fr. Rupert C.M.I was the first Head of the Department of Chemistry. In 1998 the department was upgraded as a graduate department with the introduction of B Sc. Chemistry. The department was upgraded with MSc degree course in 2012. The department provides a state-of-the-art laboratory to cater the requirements of both UG and PG students. The department provides a scholastic atmosphere through competent instruction, curricular and extra- curricular activities. The academic atmosphere in the department is a rare blend of modern day technical skills and traditional emphasis on imparting knowledge. The department fulfills its dream of inculcating group dynamics, human skills and employable skills in the students by conducting intercollegiate quiz & paper presentation competitions. The department promotes research habits amongst undergraduate and post graduate students and updates them of the recent trends in Chemistry through National/International conferences, workshops, industrial and research institution visits. The department enhances the employability skills through the Add-on courses /value added courses / certificate courses conducted by the department. The Chemistry department is one of the best departments which have produced university rank holders in undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, CSIR – NET qualified candidates. The Department of Chemistry has in-plant training programmes offered for its students at various industries like Kunnath Paper Mills, CIPET, Palakkad, Kerala Solvent extraction, Sitaram Ayurveda, and Rubber Park. The students are given research and industrial exposure by taking them to research institutes like BITS Pilani, Goa, NIT, Calicut, CMET, Athani, CUSAT, Kerala Water Authority Lab etc and to industries like Rubber Park, Sud Chemie, Mysore, Sandal Soap factory etc. The Department of Chemistry made a soil survey of the Division. Samples of soil from every home of the Division were collected, the quality of the soil was tested and the report was handed over to each family of the division along with the recommended list of plants that can be grown in each house. A number of segments within the prescribed syllabus of Chemistry are given more focus as it caters better to the needs of the students and society. The former heads of the department are Prof. U.A.Poulose, Prof. E.P.Varied, Dr.K.T.Johnson and Prof. Joseph B.I. The department’s strength and richness are the highly placed Alumni. From 2019, the department is led by Dr Bolie Therattil.
